There has to be a better way.
That’s where Greenfields started. After spending six months homeschooling our kids while traveling in Central America, I was having major anxiety about putting them back into a traditional school. The rows of desks, fill-in-the-blank worksheets, one-size-fits-all curricula, constant high-stakes testing and lost time and potential were too much. There had to be a better way.
I started to look for ways to revolutionize education. To create a true and viable alternative to the traditional school system. To build a system that restores autonomy to schools. A system that starts with each child’s unique talents, passions and curiosity. A system that honors students, families and communities. A system that doesn’t judge, but empowers and strengthens. A system that hones one’s thinking and builds character. A system where failure is embraced, where pushing past your limits is expected. A system where a graduate is prepared to tackle the challenges of the future while leading a full, happy life that is profoundly rich with meaning and purpose.
I searched high and low for a learning community that held these core beliefs, had demonstrated success, and shared my vision of reinventing education. I found it in Austin, Texas at the Acton Academy.
There is a better way. And it starts now.
Greenfields Academy will be based on the Acton Academy’s learning principles. They are mentoring us as we develop our school. With Acton Academy’s academic model and Greenfields structure, I believe we’ve found that better way. My hope is that after learning about our school, you will send your children and see what they can do, who they can become. At least join us. Become a teacher. Mentor a child. Share your story.
