I just finished reading Teaching Minds: How Cognitive Science Can Save Our Schools by Roger Schank. It’s going up on the Inspirations page for sure. His concept of a cognitive process-based education is right in line with what we are setting up.
Schank subscribes to the belief that we should build stories and experiences that have kids practicing these cognitive skills instead of teaching things. The cognitive processes he outlines are:
Conceptual – Prediction, Modeling, Experimentation and Evaluation
Analytic – Diagnosis, Planning, Causation and Judgment
Social – Influence, Teamwork, Negotiation and Describing
It made me think, “When knowledge is a commodity, what will schools teach?”
